The Met Office said the yellow warning for snow and ice will be valid until 11am.

It said: "Icy patches are expected to develop, especially on untreated surfaces, where snow has fallen on Saturday and where showers are frequent this evening and overnight.

"Showers will also be wintry at times, mainly inland and particularly over higher ground where above 200-300m a further few centimetres of snow is possible in places."

While Saturday saw some heavy snowfall in certain areas in Sheffield and South Yorkshire, today will be mostly cloudy with frequent and often heavy showers.

With a maximum temperature of 5°C, these will be a wintry mix with snow mainly falling over hills but occasionally to lower levels away from the coast, especially in heavier bursts.

Tonight will see scattered wintry showers continue overnight with occasional clear spells allowing frost and ice as the temperature is expected to plummet to 0°C.
