We here in South Yorkshire are like a wet weekend ... when it comes to wet weekends!

Research reveals an astonishing 42 per cent of Yorkshire folk secretly wish for weekend wash-outs.

Rain, rain ... not go away!

Some 57% of us have had events, including our own weddings, ruined by not planning for inclement climes while 33% use the weather as an excuse for not attending an event.

The startling stats mark release of Met Office’s new mobileweather app, hailed (excuse the pun) as "most accurate and reliable source of weather forecast information".

Nationally one in nine wish for rain so they can stay in bed all weekend, 13% binge on TV box sets while 11% of blokes see it as an excuse to get set for sport.

Tellingly sign of the times 21% hope for rain so they can save cash ... for another rainy day presumably.

More than a quarter use weather as an excuse not to see friends, 15% to avoid seeing family, six per cent even excusing themselves from a wedding.

Other important days scuppered by not planning ahead for the weather include barbecue (21%), seaside (16%) and family day out (15%).

The UK’s national weather service research found 62% of UK adults currently check the weather on a daily basis while 44% say access to apps mean they check the weather more.

Available on iOS and Android, the Met Office's new app features seven day forecast to help us plan ahead for upcoming events and make provisions in times of bad weather. It is also the only such app to include video weather forecasts – apps and TV being main ways in which UK adults consume weather information.

Meteorologist and presenter Clare Nasir said: “Ahead of the bank holiday, most people around the UK will be talking about their hopes and plans for a long, sunny weekend. But our research shows that secretly, many hope for a washout so they have an excuse to do nothing.

“We want to help people to make the most of the weather, whatever it’s doing, whether they’re hoping for sunshine or showers, so that they can plan accordingly.

“With one in ten people finding weather apps the most useful type of app, everyone can now check the latest and best weather updates when it matters via our new app.”
