deep depression to the north of Scotland will bring a squally cold front southeast across the country on Friday night and Saturday morning.

The strongest winds are likely to occur briefly on the passage of the front, or over a period of several hours over and to the lee of high ground, which could bring strong crosswinds to the A1 and M1.

Today: Early gales easing for a time, then further strong, blustery southwesterly winds returning towards evening. A sunny start but increasingly cloudy with outbreaks of rain later, becoming persistent and heavy at times over the Pennines later. Very mild later. Maximum Temperature 14C.

Tonight: Mild, windy overnight with rain at times, most persistent on the Pennines but, towards morning, a period of heavy rain and very squally winds may affect many areas. Minimum Temperature 5C .

Saturday: Heavy rain and squally winds clearing then sunny spells and showers, these turning to snow at times, especially on hills. Turning colder, despite the sunshine, as winds stay blustery. Maximum Temperature 7C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday: Unsettled throughout with rain or showers, some wintry on hills on Sunday and especially Tuesday. Often very windy. Generally feeling on the cold side, although milder for a time Monday.
