The incident occurred at around 11pm on Saturday, April 30, when a two-seater wooden garden bench was carried over Froddingham Road footbridge in Scunthorpe and thrown onto the railway lines directly below.

The following morning a passenger train hit the bench causing extensive damage to the undercarriage and the train was subsequently taken out of service for repairs. Fortunately none of the passengers or staff on board were injured.

Investigating officer PC Michelle Pidgen said: “I cannot emphasise enough just how dangerous this act was.

"The consequences could have been so much worse. The people on the train were left shaken by what happened and were fortunate not to have been injured.

“The cost to the rail company for cancelled trains and delays totalled more than £5,500 and the subsequent impact on rail travellers due to train delays as a result of this incident were extensive.”

Officers want to speak to the men in the CCTV images, pictured carrying the bench to the overbridge.
