Warm hearted pie donations from Doncaster's Topping Pie Company

Doncaster bakery, The Topping Pie Company, has given 1,400 pies and quiche to the Thorne and Moorends Community hub, an independent food bank that offers food and support to those in need.

A range of products from Huntsman, Yorkshire Farmers and Hoop pork pies to two varieties of handcrafted quiche have been given to vulnerable people as part of the bakery’s programme of community involvement and charitable support.

The food bank was established in 2014 by retired local Thorne couple Glenys and Michael Hennessey (pictured with their team of volunteers) and a group of like-minded friends with £250 and food from their own cupboards.

The hub became a registered charity in August 2015. The food bank still relies on donations from the community and local businesses.

Glenys, 68, a retired HM Prison operational support officer and husband Michael, 70, a retired business owner, recognised the area was suffering from food poverty.

Glenys said: “We cannot thank The Topping Pie Company enough for their generous food donation. These delicious pies and quiche will feed those in need for around three weeks and are particularly suited to single people with no cooking facilities.

“We will also use the products for our ‘Caring in Doncaster’ initiative, which feeds the homeless on Doncaster market place. They will also supplement the Old Age Pensioner Centre in Thorne.”

We cannot praise Glenys and Michael enough for the hard work they inject into the scheme, alongside a dedicated team of volunteers.” Open every Wednesday at the Rugby Clubhouse, Thorne from 9am-12 noon and at the satellite foodbank at Moorends Children’s Centre between 9.30am-10.30am.
