Scores of medics at the Doncaster health trust were among those taking part in the strike yesterday following a row with the government over new contracts.
The health trust confirmed the action had resulted in the cancellation of 18 elective operations.
Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust also confirmed the strike had resulted in the cancellation of 72 outpatient follow-up appointments and 48 new outpatient appointments.
The trust currently has 269 junior doctors working for it – the majority of which were expected to take part in the strike action.
A junior doctor is any medic who is yet to become a consultant or a GP.
Government proposals, headed up by health secretary Jeremy Hunt, include reclassifying a doctor’s normal working week to include Saturdays and up to 10pm every night except Sunday.
This is the first strike by junior doctors over pay and conditions since 1975, although they were involved in the 2012 walkout over pensions.
