Shocked residents who live close to the scene described the attack as “disturbing” and told how they will now avoid using the thoroughfare after dark.

One man aged in his 50s who was walking his dog through the ginnel yesterday morning said: “We saw how police had cordoned the scene off and it was quite alarming to see. I wouldn’t come through here at night.”

Two elderly women using the path were also in a state of shock.

One said: “We only use it in the day time but I think we might avoid it all together now. It’s terrible and a sad state of affairs when you feel like you can’t use a pathway to get home.”

A woman who lives in nearby Woodknot Mews added: “A sex attack is shocking anyway, but I think it is particularly unusual that it has happened to a man. It’s very disturbing.“

She called for more safety features in the ginnel in a bid to deter further attacks.

“It is not very well lit so extra lighting might stop this kind of thing from happening again.”

South Yorkshire Police said the victim did not know his attackers and one of them carried out the sexual assault before running off towards Tickhill Road.

“A thorough investigation into this matter is now underway and we will be reviewing CCTV footage of the area.”

This incident comes after a woman was reportedly robbed and raped at knife-point by three men in an alleyway off Queen Street in Balby around 11pm on February 20.
