VIDEO: Johnny Vegas signs his new book at Doncaster Waterstones

Fans of comedian Johnny Vegas lined up to meet him at Doncaster’s Waterstones store today.

The Benidorm TV star was at the Frenchgate venue to sign copies of his new autobiography ‘Becoming Johnny Vegas’.

Aaron Haigh, 24, of Stainforth, said he was a big Johnny Vegas fan: “I’ve got all the Benidorm collection.”

Aaron was there with wife Kayleigh, 26, who is expecting the couple’s first children: “He was asking us about our twins that are due in April.”

Mark and Olivia Beardshaw of Harworth had been waiting about an hour and a half to catch their hero, and said: “He’s fantastic, amazing, and he’s spending so much time with everybody. Some people just sign their books but he is having a laugh and a joke. He is exactly what you see on the TV.”

Johnny said: “I honest to God didn’t think people would be here that early, one woman started queuing at 9am.”

He explained where he got his stage name from: “It was originally going to be Johnny Casino, like in Grease, but it’s a bit lost in time. I got hammered with my mate and he just started calling me Vegas as a nickname, it’s a bit more rock ‘n’ roll than Michael Joseph Pennington!”

And what about his time filming in Doncaster on the set of the Christmas edition of Open All Hours this week? “It gave me a shiver stood outside it. I went to the shop expecting everything to be like it was on the TV.”

And he joked: “David Jason was doing all his own stunts - he was supposed to pretend to be falling off his bike but he actually did fall off!”
