Southend United are tomorrow's opening day opponents - and the due diligence has been done on Chris Powell’s side.

But Rowe says new boss Grant McCann has got his squad focused primarily on themselves and what they can do.

“I think this season what we’ve done is focus on us as a group,” said Rowe.

“It’s all about us - us as a unit, us as a group. Where can we go? What do we want to achieve?

“It’s not a lack of respect [for other teams].

“It’s just confidence, and trying to push this group of players to a level where we know we can go.

“It’s been narrowed into what we can do this year, and how we set our stall out.”

Rowe is reluctant to publicise his own and his team’s specific targets for the season but makes no secret of the squad’s ambition to play at a higher level.

“We’ve got to have a vision and ambition, and we all want to play at a higher level,” he said.

“No one is satisfied with League One, no disrespect to the league.

“But football is about advancement and we want to go that next level which is the Championship.

“There’s no reason we shouldn’t tell the press that we want to play higher because everyone knows that’s where we want to go.

“We’ll go about or business quietly in terms of learning and improving throughout the season, and picking up new things because it is a new manager and a new squad."
