VIDEO: Ferguson to address Doncaster Rovers' 'quality in final third' after more frustration in front of goal at Oldham
Darren Ferguson says he will this summer address a lack of quality in the final third after Rovers drew another blank at struggling Oldham Athletic.
Rovers battled out a goalless draw with the relegation-threatened Latics and only six sides have scored fewer goals this season in League One.
Ferguson felt had his side shown some quality in advanced areas it would have been enough to decide a tight and nervy contest.
But he praised the commitment of his side to continue battling to the end.
"It was a competitive game as I thought it would be," he told the Free Press and Star.
"The players showed again how much they are wanting to win games at the end of the season. It was great commitment from the players again.
"I think today is a good example of how the season has been as a whole.
"We defended very well. There was a good shape about us, good distances.
"But where it really matters we were not good enough. At the top end of the pitch.
"We've not scored enough goals, the final pass, the final shot. Times when we could have shot and we've not.
"I think that has been the biggest Achilles heel all season, that quality.
"It's not every individual obviously because that's not been the case.
"But too many times we've missed opportunities to get shots off, or the final pass.
"The quality has not been there and that is something I need to address for next season."
Ferguson was particularly frustrated with a hesitancy to shoot displayed by his side in the stalemate.
On numerous occasions opportunities appeared to have opened up but players elected to dribble on or pass, typically losing the ball in the process.
"I think they want to take one more pass," Ferguson said.
"At times the ball, because it was such a lively pitch, we had to concentrate on it.
"But we seemed to want to take one more pass and generally when we did that it was the wrong choice.
"I'm delighted with the players' commitment and again another clean sheet.
"There was a lot of good performances. I thought Danny Amos was magnificent."
