Rovers started superbly but petered out as the game wore on, let down by a lack of accuracy with passes.

While pleased overall with the first half performance, boss Ferguson was unhappy with some of the play at the Priestfield Stadium.

He said: "I thought the first half we played very well but we didn't take capitalise on the control and dominance we had on the game.

"Gillingham started with a three at the back as we thought they might do but then they matched us up.

"We were really dominant in the first half.

"The second half, they have thrown two big lads up front and gone really direct.

"It caused us a problem, we couldn't get any rhythm to our play.

"Saying that, we had the best chances of the game. Mathieu Baudry's volley and Alfie May, I don't know why he has taken a touch.

"The players know, we know where we want wrong today and it's the final decision in the last third.

"The final pass, the final shot.

"Counterattacks, we had lots of them and we do a lot of work on them.

"We just didn't make the right decision today and that is something we need to improve on.

"The positives are it's another clean sheet and the first half, I was very pleased with everything apart from the fact we didn't go in ahead."
