Bikers in Bawtry said a big “bienvenue” and “bonjour” to celebrate the Tour de France coming to Yorkshire.

Bonjour Bawtry, a two-day static cycling event kicked off this morning on Market Hill in aid of Aurora with more than 200 riders from local businesses competing in 20 teams for four hours per day to see who can travel the furthest.

Riders are pedalling as fast as they can for each ten-minute session and when time is called after four hours the winning, team will be decided on a theoretical distance covered.

It is no coincidence that there is another famous cycling event taking place through Yorkshire at the same time as Bonjour Bawtry, so it will be interesting to see how far the teams can cover over the same time.

“This is a fantastic event for everyone to come along, soak up the atmosphere and cheer on the different teams on both days. As well as lots of pedal power, there will also be fun family entertainment including Bonjour Bawtry - French-themed food and Champagne by the glass - cocktails, Bawtry beers and wines,” said Peter Bradley, Aurora campaign manager.

Rebecca Dickenson, chairman of Bawtry Retail Association said: “It is a great way to promote the camaraderie between the town’s businesses, attract visitors to the town and raise funds for this fantastic local charity.”
