UPDATED: Doncaster Rovers sign Stoke City midfielder Lecygne on loan
New Doncaster Rovers loanee Eddy Lecygne will compete with Paul Keegan for a starting berth after arriving from Stoke City, Darren Ferguson has said.
The 19-year-old has joined on a month-long loan after impressing at U21 level with the Potters.
And Ferguson says the France U19 international will provide some much-needed cover in the Rovers midfield.
“That’s a position I was looking at because at the moment in that sitting position we’ve only really got Paul Keegan who can do it,” Ferguson said.
“Eddy is more of a sitter in terms of trying to get control of the game. He’s good technically so we’re pleased to get him.
“He’s only a young lad, 19-year-old but he comes highly recommended, a really good central midfield player.
“He’s got a good range of passing. I’ve seen him a few times, he’s a good player.
Lecygne is in contention to start against Port Vale on Tuesday night with Ferguson suggesting Keegan may be due a rest after making five consecutive starts following long term injury.
Lecygne told Rovers’ official website: “The manager [Mark Hughes] rang me on Sunday and said that he wanted me to go for a month on loan and it’s a good chance for me so I accepted straight away and I’m very happy to be here.
“I like to get on the ball and play but I also like to put my foot in and work hard for the team.
“I’m looking to help the team out and do the best I can to help them.
“From a personal point, I want to try and get experience and games under my belt so I can go higher up in the future.”
Ferguson stepped up his hunt for an extra midfielder after Conor Grant was forced off with a dead leg in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Fleetwood Town. Grant should return however for the clash with Vale.
Harry Middleton is currently out with a hamstring injury, and Cameron Stewart remains sidelined after his sickening fall against Gillingham. Nathan Tyson has a hamstring problem while Andy Butler is out with a groin problem.
Meanwhile, tomorrow night’s opponents Port Vale have signed former Rovers striker Theo Robinson from Motherwell.
