UPDATE: Lorry driver killed in crash on Doncaster motorway as he changed tyre

A 59-year-old lorry driver has died after being involved in a collision that occurred as he was in the process of changing a tyre on his HGV while it was parked on the hard shoulder of a Doncaster motorway.

The incident occurred shortly before 8am yesterday morning on the southbound carriageway of the A1, close to the Sprotbrough Works exit between junctions 36 and 37.

Police were called to the scene following reports that a white coloured Citroen DS3 car had left the carriageway and collided with the driver of a heavy goods vehicle (HGV), which was parked on the hard shoulder, while the driver was in the process of changing a tyre.

The HGV driver, who was aged 59 and from Darlington, died of his injures at the scene.

The female driver of the Citroen and a male passenger both suffered whiplash injuries and were taken to hospital.

Police are keen to speak to any witnesses to the collision; in particular anyone who may have dashboard mounted cameras fitted to their vehicle, and were travelling between junctions 36 and 38 on the southbound carriageway of the A1, in the time prior to the incident.
