Families told of their shock after bosses of Amethyst House Care Home in Rossington said this week that they are closing the facility - and gave them just 30 days to find new accommodation.

The company which runs the home - Four Seasons Health Care - said they had been operating "at a loss" and the decision was "unavoidable" amid claims from relatives that they were putting "profit before people."

Doncaster Council said it is now working with the company and families to find new accommodation for residents, some of which suffer from dementia and are receiving end-of-life care.

Jon Tomlinson, assistant director of commissioning at the council, said: “Of course we are saddened at the news of closure and we are working with the owners to find suitable alternative accommodation for the remaining residents currently supported there.

"There are places at other homes available for them in Doncaster should the residents wish to consider them and we have provided families with these details. We will work closely with the home’s owners to support residents and their families at this difficult and unsettling time and help them find new homes if they wish."

He added that rumours circulating on social media that the authority had a part to play in the closure were untrue.

He said: "This is a privately run business and we are not part of that decision."

There are 23 residents being cared for by 31 staff at the care home.

Imogen Challis, whose mother-in-law is a resident at the home, said: "She is 96 with Alzheimer's, unable to walk, and no capacity mental or otherwise. 30 day consultation before closure plans enacted."

Rossington and Bawtry councillor John Cooke described it as "tragic news" and added he hoped a new buyer could be found soon.

In a statement, Four Seasons Health Care said the facility had been "operating at a loss as the fees it is receiving do not cover its operating costs. We have been paying to provide care and this is not sustainable."

The firm added it is working with the council to find new accommodation for the residents.
