A 15-foot puppet will greet delegates at the UK Independence Party today to “welcome” their support for shale gas and fracking.

The tongue-in-cheek giant will tell delegates that ‘fracking is the way forward for the UK’ and that ‘he is looking forward to fracking the desolate North’.

The puppeteers from Friends of the Earth and Frackfree South Yorkshire will highlight the risks to local communities from fracking for shale gas and other unconventional gas sources and the impacts on climate change of a reckless “dash for gas.”

Friends of the Earth’s Yorkshire and Humber campaigner, Simon Bowens said: “UKIP are one of the main cheerleaders for the fracking industry but they need to wake up to the environmental and health risks facing local communities from pollution of their air and water.

They also need to detail how they are going to tackle climate change and end the UK’s dangerous reliance on fossil fuels.”

Frackfree South Yorkshire are a community-led network of residents opposing the imminent threat of fracking in South Yorkshire and North Nottinghamshire. Fracking company iGas have stated that they will be putting forward proposals for explorations for shale gas in the area this Autumn.
