Motorists urged to avoid M1 after horror crash leaves two dead

Motorists are being urged to avoid the M1 after a horror smash in which two people were killed.

Two men died in the collision after a motorist went the wrong way along the motorway.

Emergency services were alerted to the smash near Kegworth, Leicestershire, at around 2am today.

An 87-year-old motorist and a 27-year-old passenger in a van were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Before the collision, police had received reports of a car travelling the wrong way along the southbound carriageway.

The road is expected to be closed for hours.
