Town's bishop announces he is leaving post

THE Bishop of Doncaster has announced his retirement after 11 years in the role.

The Right Rev Cyril Ashton will retire next year, he has confirmed.

Bishop Cyril said: "The timing of retirement requires some thought but both my wife and I feel that next summer will be the right time to move on.

"I have no doubt that others might think it is high time I rode off into the sunset. I am looking forward to new challenges and opportunities after being Bishop of Doncaster. It has been a huge pleasure to serve the Church in South Yorkshire".

There will be a farewell service for Bishop Cyril on July 13, 2011, at Doncaster Minster.

Bishop Cyril was previously a vicar in Lancaster and director of training for the Diocese of Blackburn before moving to Doncaster.

Dr Steven Croft, the Bishop of Sheffield, said: "It has been a privilege to benefit from Cyril's wisdom over many years."
