Owston Park have employed a full time PE coordinator, Bradley Johnston, and also key to their winning application was an after-school martial arts club.

“We’re thrilled to be awarded Centre of Excellence status,” said headteacher Vicky Stinson.

“The opportunity for our children to participate on a weekly basis in a martial arts club with a qualified coach from the local community gave them something fun, structured and a sense of ownership.

“In a large percentage of cases it’s actually improved their attendance, attainment and behaviour in school. We’ve also put on additional after school clubs and are a reward for good work in lessons, attendance and behaviour in school.”

Owston Park have also been named South Yorkshire winners in the ‘Whole School Improvement’ category in the Yorkshire Primary PE and Sport Premium Awards.
