The Town Fields Gala was run on a blazing afternoon, with residents taking in a programme of entertainment ranging from Irish dancing to mascot racing.

The gala was run to raise cash for the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Kidney Association and is one of the charity’s main annual fundraisers.

This year, the top mascot in the mascot race turned out to be a Ninja Panda mascot from Endeavor Marital Arts, finishing first in a field of 14, all braving the heat in their full costumes.

Other popular attractions included the Women’s Institute tea and cakes stall, as well fire engines and ambulances which had been brought to the show by the National Emergency Services Museum in Sheffield.

They offered fire engine rides around the local roads.

Organisers estimated that more than 2,000 people attended the gala, and they believe it raised in the region of £2,000.

Doncaster and Bassetlaw Kidney Association secretary Denise Holliday, one of the organisers, was delighted with the attendance at this year’s gala, and thought it had been a success.

She said: “Just as important than the money which was raised, is that 96 people have signed up to the organ donors register at the gala. That is potentially lives saved as a result of the gala, which we are so pleased about.”
