A thief who stole more than £320 of designer clothing from a Doncaster shop to send back to relatives in Romania has been fined.

Mihail Croitoru, aged 26, was ordered to pay a £150 fine, a £30 victim surcharge and £85 in court costs after admitting two counts of stealing clothing from TK Maxx.

The court heard Croitoru was stopped by security after leaving the shop in Wheatley Hall Road with just over £320 worth of designer clothing on July 26.

After police carried out a search at his home other goods of unknown value, stolen from the store on July 16, were found.

Croitoru, who has no previous convictions, had removed labels from the clothing before walking out of the store with them.

All of the items were recovered.

Speaking at Doncaster Magistrates’ Court, Croitoru said: “I am very sorry about this, it was stupid - I don’t know why I did it, I was lost, I don’t know why.”

The court heard Croitoru had not intended to sell the clothing, but was planning to send some of it home as presents to his family in Eastern Europe.

Croitoru, of Childers Street, Hyde Park, was originally from Romania, the court heard, but had been living and working in Doncaster since October of last year.
