Northern artist Ghislaine Howard was the guest speaker to members of the Gainsborough and District Decorative and Fine Arts Society at the Trinity Centre for their October meeting.
Named as Woman of the Year in 2008 for her own contribution to art and society, Ghislaine, a painter of powerful and expressive means dealing with the human condition, is best known for her ground-breaking exhibition concerning pregnancy and birth, the first of its kind at Manchester City Art Gallery which attracted much critical acclaim.
Her lecture discussed the growth and acceptance of women artists from the turn of the 20C in a world for so long dominated by men.
With beautiful illustrations she compared the work in particular of Berthe Morisot, Laura Knight, Kath Kollwitz, Frida Kahlo in Mexico, Georgia O’Keefe and mid century Elizabeth Blackadder alongside her own work and their huge influence on her.
* The society meets at 1.45 pm in the Trinity Arts Centre, Gainsborough on the first Thursday of the month (excluding January, July and August) .
