A spokesman said: “ This is a circular walk beginning at the layby on the A638 between Hurst Lane and Littleworth Lane. It is 6 miles in length taking in Auckley, Branton, and the Wildlife Park.

“Enter Hurst Plantation by the fingerpost and take the wide footpath to the right. On entering a clearing head right and lookout for a path in a gully. Take this as it veers right into thick bush then turn left for 100m passing a pond on the left. Continue on this footpath as it turns left and after another 100m turn right to join the main footpath.

“ Follow this path north for 700m passing under the Great Yorkshire Way till reaching Hayfields Lane, (remember this as it is part of the return journey) Turn left on Hayfields Lane then at a stile and finger post turn right and follow path keeping to left of caravans. Pass through gate, across footpath and over stile (we pass this point on return journey) and continue in this direction until reaching railway line. Cross with care, and continue in the same direction through Insley Plantation and follow the footpath east.

“This area is now under construction and the footpath has been safely diverted so please follow the pedestrian signs to reach Bell Butts Lane. After about 600m look out for a fingerpost pointing left and follow this to reach B1396 Main Street / Doncaster Road.

“There is now a kilometre of pavement / grass verge walking passing on route the Eagle and Child and Three Horse Shoes pubs. Watch out on the left for Brockholes Lane and take this to the Wildlife Park, where you will enter via the main court yard and exit via the shop!

“ Follow the pedestrian footpath south for just over a kilometre to reach Warning Tongue lane and cross with care. Turn left and over the railway bridge. Cross road again (take care this is a blind spot) and take the wide footpath signposted Public Bridleway and pass through Hayfield Lakes (noting the path crossing from the outward journey) continue straight crossing again Hayfield Lane and now retracing our steps under the Great Yorkshire Way until reaching the outer edge of Hurst

Plantation.
