Take a nosey in the garden

The gardens are all owned by members of the green-fingered group ‘WHAGS and BAGS’ - Whin Hill Amateur Gardeners Society and Bessacarr Amateur Gardeners Society - who are, once again, welcoming visitors in support of Doncaster Women’s Aid and Doncaster ReMap.

All seven gardens are totally different and within easy walking of one another, offering visitors the opportunity to look around: a garden on a hill, a compact garden packed with plants, a long garden featuring lots of mature trees, a flower arranger’s garden, a newly-built modern design garden, a Japanese-style garden and an old English lawn and shrub bordered garden. Among the gardens is one owned by a former Gold Medal Winner at the Chelsea Flower Show and another that recently featured in Amateur Gardening Magazine.

“We try and make the open days a summer fair type of atmosphere,” says Ken Kilvington, a member of WHAGS and BAGS, who designed one of the open gardens on Whin Hill Road.

“We’re friends who were brought together by our love of gardening – and it’s a good social event, really. It’s great to share this passion with others, whether people want to come and have a look around for an hour or for the whole afternoon. Over the last three years, out open days have raised thousands of pounds for local charities.”

The gardens will be open between 1pm and 5pm this Saturday and Sunday and there will be hot drinks, afternoon teas, and plants, preserves and pickles available to buy.

Visit Walker’s Nursery in Blaxton to collect your £4 ticket, that will grant you access to all seven gardens, or simply call in to any of the participating gardens on Whin Hill Road this weekend.
