Stag do's and don'ts stripped bare

You think you know what ACTUALLY happens on an average stag do?

If you had the sneaking suspicion that your average stag night was just a group of blokes repeatedly getting knocked back from bars before finally gaining entry to their chosen city’s least salubrious establishment for a night of cheap booze and cliched advice giving - you might be right.

But, thankfully, we no longer have to speculate. The analytical minds at stag party organisers The Stag Company have surveyed thousands of recently married men and published their findings.

According to their research, many of the preconceptions around stag parties could be wide of the mark.

Only a fifth of men wore fancy dress on their stag night (21.94 per cent) and 63 per cent weren’t even pranked by their mates. When it comes to that old soap opera favourite - being tied to a lamp post - only 7 per cent of respondents reported falling victim.

The survey polled 1,550 married men based in the UK and found that four of the five most popular stag destinations with British men were in the UK, with Bournemouth topping the table along with Brighton, Newcastle, Prague and Bristol.

In what is either a sign of progress, or a sign that 1,200 married men are liars, 81 per cent of respondents said they didn’t go to a strip club on their stag weekend, preferring activities like bubble football and paintballing.

For Tom Bourlet, of The Stag Company, a stag night is all about the memories: “I personally feel the groom should never spend more than ten minutes without a drink in his hand. At the last stag party I attended, my friend was having shots at 10am, while he could barely walk by 5pm.

“You obviously want to remember your last night of freedom, but you also want it to be a night you will never forget, however us Brits have a tendency to drink ourselves into oblivion.

“Maybe sneak a drink of water in between each pint to ensure you remember the big night.”

Despite that, for some, the old saying ‘what goes on tour, stays on tour’ proved to be right, with for 41 per cent claiming not to remember their stag night at all.
