South Yorkshire waste treatment plant in line for awards

A new waste treatment facility which is revolutionising how waste is managed in South Yorkshire has been shortlisted for three prestigious national awards.

The MRW National Recycling Awards recognise excellence and innovation in recycling and resource management in the waste industry.

The waste facility at Manvers opened, which cost around £77 million, last July and treats leftover waste from almost 350,000 households in Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster, turning it into a useful resource, such as fuel and electricity, rather than sending it to landfill. The facility has created more than 40 new jobs in the Dearne Valley.

The project is a finalist in three categories – Private-Public Sector Partnership, Best Energy from Waste initiative, and Communications.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London in July.

The facility is the result of a partnership between (Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham councils and 3SE, a consortium of Shanks, the international waste-to-produce business and SSE, one of the UK’s leading energy companies.

It diverts up to 96.5 per cent of the waste it receives away from landfill.
