A South Yorkshire pharmacist has received high praise from a patient following his potentially life-saving intervention.
Pharmacist Stuart Hermiston received a phone call from Ernest Wilkinson to thank him for making a direct call to his GP after realising he was unwell.
"I’m honestly not sure if I’d still be here if it weren’t for his intervention," said the grateful pensioner patient.
Outlines Ernest: “I hadn’t been feeling well and, even though my family asked me to, I didn’t go to the doctors.
“When I popped in to pick up my blood pressure tablets, I had a chat like I usually do with Stuart, and he asked me a couple of times if I was feeling OK.
"I told him I was and I went home. Around 10 minutes later, I got a phone call from my GP surgery who said they’d been advised, by Stuart, that I wasn’t well and could I come in.”
Stuart, of Cantley Goodison branch of Weldricks, continues: “When I spoke with Mr Wilkinson that particular day, I could tell he wasn't right. He seemed a bit distant but was adamant everything was fine.
“After he left, I felt something was amiss so headed through to the surgery, who we have a good relationship with, and was able to speak to one of the GPs. She listened to my concerns and said she would give Mr Wilkinson a ring and get him in for a check-up.”
Ernest, still a sprightly 92-year-old, continues: “My GP consequently told me I was suffering from severe dehydration and I spent four days in hospital.
"I’ve since been back to the hospital and seen a urologist who has identified I have an enlarged prostrate, all connected with the dehydration and the reason I was feeling unwell to begin with.
“I can’t thank Stuart enough for making that call to my GP surgery. I’m honestly not sure if I’d still be here if it weren’t for his intervention. He did a wonderful job and I want everyone to know about it!”
Adds Stuart: “It was nice to hear that I was able to make a difference and it reminds me why I enjoy being able to help people through community pharmacy."
Concludes Richard Wells, superintendent pharmacist at Weldricks: “Mr Wilkinson’s story illustrates just how our pharmacists go above and beyond for their patients.
"I’m very proud of how Stuart handled this situation and delighted that Mr Wilkinson is now on the road to recovery. We wish him all the very best.”
