A South Yorkshire man has been jailed for nearly three years after indecently assaulting two girls aged eight and ten.

Jason Garside, aged 43 of Thicket Drive, Maltby, was sentenced to 34 months in prison for crimes committed over 20 years ago.

At a trial last month, a jury at Sheffield Crown Court found Garside guilty of two counts of indecent assault.

He had entered guilty pleas to a further two counts of indecent assault and one count of gross indecency at the start of the trial.

The offences took place in a village near Maltby between 1989 and 1992.

Rachel Harrison, prosecuting, read out a victim statement from one of the victims, now 33, saying she ‘re-lives’ the ordeal everyday and that Garside ‘corrupted and polluted’ her childhood.

In 1995 Garside also pleaded guilty to three offences of indecent assault against a boy under the age of 14.

Amanda Denton, defending, said that Garside had ‘learning difficulties’ and ‘struggled’ with his maturity.

Judge Julian Goose QC sentencing said: “One of the victims has suffered severe psychological harm and she has been effected by this all of her adult life.

“This has also affected her adult relationships and her husband has woken up to her screams in the night.”

Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Constable Nichole Russell said: “Garside’s victims have shown exceptional bravery, especially as he continued to deny elements of his offending and put them through the painful process of recounting their abuse at a trial.

“Throughout, they have conducted themselves admirably and I hope they are reassured by today’s sentencing, knowing their abuser is finally behind bars.

“This case further demonstrates that South Yorkshire Police will take robust action against those who sexually abuse children, regardless of when the abuse took place, and we will do whatever we can to bring these offenders before the courts.”

Garside was also given an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
