Sneak peek at college construction for potential Isle students

Young people from across the Isle are offered an exclusive chance to see behind the scenes at one of the area’s major construction sites and the region’s first University Technical College, the Humber UTC.

The UTC opens in September this year, with a mass of opportunities for potential students.

Over the next five years, the construction industry will recruit 185,000 employees – many of which could be young people.

So on March 6 and 7, Clugston Construction will open the doors to the Humber UTC site in Scunthorpe so that those considering construction as a career can take a tour and learn more. The event is open to young people, their parents and anyone else who may be interested.

Open doors is an industry initiative to show the diverse career opportunities that construction has to offer and the wide range of skills employed to make buildings and infrastructure. It will also demonstrate the importance of construction to both the national and regional economies.

The Open Doors Weekend is the result of a partnership between five leading industry bodies: UK Construction Group (UKCG), CITB-ConstructionSkills, The Considerate Constructors Scheme, Construction News and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).

The £9.5m Humber UTC will specialise in engineering and renewables, alongside other key subjects. It is currently being built in Church Square, Scunthorpe, for 14 to 19 year-olds and will have the curriculum designed and delivered by business and education partners from across the region. It will create 600 student places and 220 jobs.

Applications are still open for places at the Humber UTC and people should visit www.humberutc.co.uk for details on how to apply.

Paul Gouland, Marketing Director at Clugston, said: “Construction is undergoing rapid change and needs to develop a skilled, diverse workforce to meet these challenges and maintain its position as one of this country’s most dynamic, creative and important industries. Nowadays, construction is more about careers than jobs and the expected increase in demand for management roles in the next few years means that we need quality talent entering the industry now to fill these future positions.

“Open Doors Weekend is a unique opportunity for the industry to display the complexity, excitement and scope of modern construction projects and give people a taste of what it’s really like to work in the industry. Places are limited and I would urge anyone interested in attending to register their place at www.opendoors.weekend.co.uk , to avoid disappointment.”

Coun Liz Redfern, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “The £9.5m Humber UTC is the first to be built in the region and it is going to be a fantastic environment for young people to learn.
