Smooth run to top trophy for Doncaster student Joel

The Doncaster College student edged out seven of the country’s finest young painters to be crowned Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year 2015.

Joel beat reigning champion Ryan Chamberlain to clinch the title, a trophy and £3,000 cash at the National Painting and Decorating Show in Coventry.

Thousands of spectators watched as eight finalists were put to the test.

Joel, who also works as an apprentice for Bagnalls, delivered an outstanding finish to all of the required tasks which featured a wall panel as well as a door and framework.

Judges viewed each contestant display their painting and cutting in skills, using brushes, rollers, and stencils.

Joel said: “I thoroughly enjoyed being part of the competition - learning new skills, meeting new people and working under pressure.

“It’s a real dream come true for me and is worth all the hours I’ve spent practising my skills!

He continued: “It’s given me a big confidence boost and I know that when it comes to taking the first steps in my career after college, owning the Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year 2015 title is going to make a massive difference to my CV.”

Joel’s tutor at Doncaster College, Glynn Nettleton, said: “This competition offers young people a fantastic opportunity to showcase their skills on a national stage and help further their career.

“Joel’s an inspiration to other painting and decorating students at Doncaster College and we couldn’t be prouder of him for winning!”
