SLIDESHOW: Having a wheely good time at Belton Barrow Race

Isle residents finally got to take part in annual Belton Barrow Race last weekend after it was postponed earlier in the year.

The much-loved race is a tradition which dates back to the 1950s. It saw at least 25 teams of volunteers race around a variety of routes across the village in wheelbarrows.

The tradition came in to being after a bet was proffered for a man to be pushed for three miles around the village within a set time, calling for a pint of beer at each of five pubs en route.

This year, the event started at the Crown Inn, Belton, with the first race at 1.30pm.

Races took place throughout the afternoon and their were different categories for children, adults and veterans.

Committee member Joanne Pollard said: “It was a really good day. The children enjoyed it more than the adults, but the weather was good and it went really well.”

The committee are already planning next year’s race.
