Sir Alex Ferguson's first words on waking up following brain surgery were to ask Doncaster Rovers' result at the weekend, according to reports.

Rovers boss Darren Ferguson missed Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Wigan Athletic as he rushed to be by his father's side after he suffered a brain haemorrhage that morning.

Sir Alex underwent surgery later that day at Salford Royal Infirmary, which is understood to have gone well.

And after emerging from an induced coma, the 76-year-old's first words were 'So, how did Doncaster get on?' according to The Sun.

Sir Alex also reportedly discussed having to miss former club Manchester United's FA Cup final appearance against Chelsea next weekend but insisted he will be at the Champions League final in Kiev a week later.

Darren has been at his father's bedside with mother Cathy and brothers Jason and Mark. According to The Sun they are said to be “pleased and extremely encouraged” by his progress.
