Sheffield braces for more winter weather

Snow and sleet fell heavily for much of yesterday across the city and surrounding area.

Both the Snake Pass and Woodhead Pass through the Peak District were forced to close as the Arctic blast struck.

Pupils from Bradfield School, near Worrall, were sent home early at lunchtime due to poor weather conditions in the area.

Snow and ice caused problems for public transport users in Sheffield and many bus routes were diverted or disrupted.

The 51 bus route was forced to terminate at Crosspool as snow had settled at Lodge Moor causing slippery conditions.

Number 85 buses were diverted at Greystones via Ecclesall Road South from both ways, and the service stopped at Knowle Lane because of ice on Greystones Road and Hoober Avenue.

Police and ambulance services were called out to an incident involving two cars on snow-covered Rivelin Valley Road

A spokesman for Meteogroup weather forecasters said the bad spell is set to continue with rain and sleet set to his Sheffield this morning with temperatures plunging below zero

This afternoon will be mostly dry and bright but hail and rain showers coming in from the north threaten to spoil any sunshine.

The day will be bitterly cold with a maximum temperature of 6C and a minimum temperature of minus 1C.

But tomorrow looks to be better and will be mostly dry with some hazy sunshine, although some showers are forecast for the afternoon and temperatures could drop to as low as minus 2C.
