Big-hearted South Yorkshire residents are being urged to support an appeal to help pay for the vet bills of a poorly neglected dog.

Sheffield-based Rain Rescue is asking for donations to fund treatment for chihuahua Violet who is in poor health.

The charity saved the petite pooch from the stray kennels in April when she was in a severe state of neglect and underweight after it appeared she had been used for breeding purposes.

Violet was on the road to recovery but has recently broken out in terrible sores and began losing her fur.

Despite every effort by the charity and their vets the cause of the breakout is unknown and Violet needs expensive emergency tests to try and get to the root of the problem so she can be given the appropriate treatment.

Lauren Sanderson, deputy charity manager, said: “Seeing Violet in such a terrible state is truly heartbreaking for ourselves and especially for her foster mum who has been caring for her so lovingly since she arrived into the charity’s care.

“We are hoping with the public’s help we can get her the treatment she so desperately needs.

“The sad fact is this is the reality for many ex-breeding bitches, they are used to produce puppies and then thrown away when they can no longer make money for their owners.”

In the last 12 months Rain Rescue has rescued over 450 dogs and cats from crisis situations.

They take in and treat some of the worst cases of abuse and neglect and in doing so last year their vet fees were in excess of £30, 000.
