Hospitals in the East Midlands and United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust warned of temporary A&E closures due to the shortage.

But Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust medical director Dr David Throssell said: “As one of the largest teaching hospital trusts and major trauma centres we are fortunate to attract and retain high-quality consultants for our A&E department.

“As a result we currently don’t have any unfilled consultant posts and provide the full range of emergency care services.”
