A total of 17 men have received the all clear from a symptomless yet potentially fatal condition thanks to the Goldthorpe Community Shop.
he shop was instrumental in setting up a mobile Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening clinic.
The clinic took place in the Health Bus, which visited locations across Goldthorpe. A AAA is a swelling of the main blood vessel in the body, the aorta, which weakens and expands. There are no symptoms and if left untreated the swelling can lead to a rupture and a serious risk of death from internal bleeding.
Helen McAlinney, AAA programme Lead for AAA screening said: “It is crucial that as many men as possible who are 65 and over are able to take up the AAA screening – there are no symptoms so a quick five minute scan could be a lifesaver.”
Men aged over 65 who have not been screened can call 01709 649100.
