Safeguarding Awareness Week is coming to South Yorkshire

'˜Safeguarding is everybody's business' is the key message to all Barnsley citizens as the council and partners prepare to launch Safeguarding Awareness Week in July (Monday 4th to Friday 8th).

Working with partners from health, the emergency services, third sector and others, the council plans to raise everyone’s awareness of what safeguarding means, the many situations in which it can arise and, importantly, signpost people to the organisations which can offer the right type of help and support.

Bob Dyson, the Independent Chair of the Barnsley Safeguarding Children and Safeguarding Adults Boards, said: “Safeguarding is about protecting vulnerable children and adults from abuse and neglect and ensuring their wellbeing. Making sure people are supported to live full and happy lives is also an important part of safeguarding, together with ensuring they have access to appropriate healthcare.”

Safeguarding Awareness Week will see a range of free activities across Barnsley to which members of the public and safeguarding professionals are encouraged to attend. Full details of the SAW programme are available at Click here .

The SAW programme has been put together to be relevant to members of the public, families and friends of children and adults in need of safeguarding, professionals and volunteers. Starting with a launch event at the town hall on Monday July 4, SAW will also feature information displays, drop-in sessions and workshops at the Better Barnsley shop in Cheapside, and other venues.

Bob Dyson added: “In line with its legal duties, the council and its partners safeguard Barnsley’s vulnerable children and adults seven days a week, 52 weeks a year. Safeguarding is much more than a legal duty; it is simply the right thing to do. This awareness week is your chance to learn more about this important issue, and to upskill yourself so you know how to recognise a safeguarding issue when it occurs and where to seek the right support. Keeping people safe is an essential duty of our society.”
