Runners set to compete in Peak District fell race

Long-distance runners, including some national favourites, will gather in the Peak District's Hope Valley as the village of Bradwell plays host to the Long and Half Tours of Bradwell on Saturday August 6.

Since its inception in 2009, the ultra-distance Long Tour of Bradwell has become one of the classic Peak District trail/fell races. It is part of the 2016 Ultra-Running Championships, with a route that includes many of the well-known hills and valleys in the Dark and White Peak. This very tough run is 33 miles long and, with 6300 feet of ascent, has more climbing per mile than almost any other long-distance running event in the Peak District.

The equally tough but shorter Half Tour takes runners on a 16-mile route with 3000 feet of climbing. Much of the route is the same as the Long Tour, but the shorter distance means non-ultra runners can compete.

Proceeds from the events go to Bradda Dads, a group of Bradwell-based fathers who raise money for local organisations and projects. Recipients of funds raised from previous races include the village schools, preschool, Beavers, Brownies, bowls club and football club.

Many of the Bradda Dads and their families volunteer at the refreshment and checkpoints on the day. Runners always comment on the cheerful camaraderie at these stops and at the finish at Bradwell sports pavilion.

Using electronic timing means everyone can see their results immediately. There are prizes in each category. The event is run under Fell Running Association (FRA) rules and is part of the runfurther.com series.

The Long Tour starts at 9am and the Half Tour at 9.30am. Pre-entry is available online, and entry on the day is permitted if there is space. The cost is £14–£21, depending on the route and when you enter.
