Wheatley Hills slipped further off the pace in North One East despite their match at Pocklington being one of only three games to escape the weather conditions.

Wheatley lost 23-0 in disappointing fashion and sit 11th in the table.

They were holding the home side to eight points at the turnround but were well beaten in the second half as they paid the price for indiscipline.

Wheatley played a man short for 30 minutes – ten in the first half and 20 in the second - as they had three players yellow carded.

And it was from one such infringement that Pocklington were awarded a penalty try when the referee deemed the visitors to have collapsed a scrum as the home side went for a pushover.

Wheatley struggled to get possession as Pocklington dominated the scrums and line-outs.

Driffield, the side immediately above Wheatley in the table, were also able to play their match at South Shields Westoe and came away with four points thanks to a 25-13 win.

Thornensians, lying second in Yorkshire Three, collected a bonus point when they ran in five tries on their way to a 29-13 victory at home to Stocksbridge.

Second row Rob Raper put Thornensians ahead with an early try and, after the visitors had edged in front with a converted try and penalty goal, Thorne levelled before half time when Raper’s second row partner Tom Hughes, who had an outstanding game taking the ball forward, touched down for a second.

Thorne drove home their advantage when speedy prop Adan Smith, one of the side’s top try scorers this season, celebrated the birth of his first child two days earlier by racing over for two tries, one converted by centre Rob Brown.

Thorne sealed their win when club newcomer Chas Tamprill came off the bench to take over at full-back and ran in the final try, converted by Brown.

Rossington Hornets could not raise a full side for their Yorkshire Five match at Hornsea and so played a friendly fixture instead.
