Rugby Union round-up: Latest from Doncaster Phoenix, Wheatley Hills, Thornensians, Rossington Hornets

Adam Kettle and Marvin Protheroe scored first half tries for Phoenix but they trailed 17-12 at the break.

A second half fightback was not enough to save Wheatley Hills from a 24-14 defeat at South Shields Westoe.

Westoe quickly grabbed the initiative and ran in four first half tries to turn round 24-0 ahead, while Wheatley were given two yellow cards and were down to 13 men at one point.

Hills improved but it was midway through the second half before their pressure was rewarded when fly-half Owen Gillvray went over for a try which he converted himself.

Gillvray accounted for all of Wheatley’s points, taking his chance with an opportunist try ten minutes later and again adding the conversion.

Fly half Jack Whitlam kicked a last minute penalty to hand Wath on Dearne a 22-20 win over Sheffield Medicals in Yorkshire Two.

Thornensians kept up their title challenge in Yorkshire Three with a 41-5 home victory over Halifax.

Thorne chipped one league point off Wetherby’s lead by scoring seven tries to earn a bonus point.

The hosts scored 19 early points without reply and were 24-5 ahead by half time.

Aran Holt, wingers Ross Healey and Tom Ambler, Ryan Pilley, Andy Ellis and brothers Tom and Stuart Hughes got on the trysheet. Rob Brown converted three.

Second-placed Thornensians are 18 points adrift of Wetherby but with two games in hand, and they have everything to play for with the top two sides gaining promotion.

They have one game in hand over third-placed Goole and their latest bonus point puts them two clear of their neighbours.

Rossington Hornets went down 21-3 to hosts Wibsey in Yorkshire Five.
