What makes the result all the more impressive is that Phoenix rested a number of first team players.

They chose to blood a number of youngsters, with a few making their debuts, including flanker Jack Thompson.

Despite only previously making one appearance on the first team bench, Joe Gomes also started at full back and had an outstanding game.

Ionians took the lead after eight minutes with first team regular Isaac Green slotting over a penalty.

But Phoenix were unfazed and showed fantastic desire and team work to take a comfortable victory.

Captain Andy Ellis gave them the lead on 20 minutes, the centre crashing over to make it 5-3.

Green responded with another penalty but Phoenix were soon in again as flanker Ben Hyde finished a move which started in their own 22. Gomes added the conversion to see Phoenix lead 12-6 at the break.

Gomes stretched the lead with a penalty and although Hull forced their way back into the game through Andy Barrass, Phoenix refused to relinquish their lead as Ellis scored his second and Gomes once again converted. Second row Chris Planchant sealed the win in the dying seconds.

Wath on Dearne were 32-8 winners against Yorkshire Two bottom side Castleford.

Thornensians bagged another big win in Yorkshire Three as their promotion push continues, this time beating hosts Aireborough 39-5.
