Rugby union round-up: Doncaster Phoenix rack up century against basement club

Dan Porter and Dave Hankinson both scored hat tricks against North One East’s bottom club, while Rob Devonshire, James Holland and Josh Fowler each went over for two tries.

Tom Barker, Ben Hyde, Adam Kettle, Joe Gomes and Jamie Lennard also got on the trysheet, while Lennard kicked nine conversions to Hankinson’s three.

Phoenix’s emphatic victory, combined with defeat for second-placed Morley at West Hartlepool, saw the Castle Park club go 12 points clear at the top of the table.

Wheatley Hills were left to salvage a losing bonus point – for holding the visitors to less than eight points – when they were edged out 28-21 in their clash with Dinnington at York Road.

The first half was tit for tat as the sides turned round level at 6-6.

Fly-half Jonny West put Dinnington ahead with a penalty goal, which right winger Owen Gillvray matched for Wheatley, before West put the visitors back in front and then Gillvray slotted over another.

But Dinnington gained the upper hand in the second half with a hat trick of tries.

Prop Sam Kerry and No 8 Tom Buckenham crossed the line for Wheatley to reduce the deficit, with one try converted by Gillvray.

With Dinnington leading 28-18, Gillvray slotted over a third penalty with two minutes remaining to ensure the bonus point.

Wath on Dearne were the latest side to fall victim to unbeaten Yorkshire Two leaders West Leeds, crashing to a 74-17 defeat on their rivals’ ground.

West Leeds’ winger Mark Calderwood scored a hat trick of tries, while centre Sam Neave and full-back Danny Booth helped themselves to two each for the hosts as they racked up a comfortable 36-12 lead by the break.

Wath hit back with tries from full-back Luke Pendlebury, fly-half Adam West and back-row Joey Minshull but they fell short of claiming a bonus point.

Thornensians, lying second in Yorkshire Three, maintained the status quo as both they and leaders Wetherby scored bonus point wins.

Thorne ran in four tries in a 24-5 victory over Bramley Phoenix at Leeds and, although they are still nine points adrift of Wetherby, they have two matches in hand.

Thorne went ahead with first half tries by flanker Aran Holt and winger Ross Healey in the first half.

Bramley pulled back a try to make the score 10-5 at the break but the visitors took control with a further try by Ryan Pilley, converted by Rob Brown. Brown was also on the mark when Thorne were awarded a penalty try with ten minutes remaining.

Rossington Hornets won 24-6 against Thirsk in Yorkshire Five.
