Wentworth and Dearne MP John Healey has welcomed an increase in tourism in Yorkshire.

VisitEngland figures show there was a 20 per cent increase in overnight visits to Yorkshire last year – the second largest increase of all the English regions.

Mr Healey also stressed the importance of building on the momentum created by the Tour de France in 2014 and securing the future of the region’s heritage sites, such as Wentworth Woodhouse.

He said: “I am pleased to see that Yorkshire is one of the best performing regions in England when it comes to attracting more tourists.

“According to the latest figures from VisitEngland Yorkshire saw the second largest increase in overnight trips at 20 per cent.

“As a Yorkshire MP, it doesn’t surprise me as I know how much the county has to offer, with the breath-taking scenery being just one of the attractions.

“No doubt the Tour de France being held in Yorkshire in 2014 boosted the figures, but we need to make sure we build on that success.

“One way that we can do that is by protecting our historic buildings, such as Wentworth Woodhouse,
