Rise in people seeking debt advice expected

People across Sheffield are expected to seek legal advice this week, as the weight of Christmas sits heavy on their shoulders '“ and bank balances.

Harry Harpham, the Labour Member of Parliament for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough, said: “Many working people are struggling to make ends meet.

“This can be a difficult time of the year for people in Sheffield because as post-Christmas bills and credit card statements arrive people can often feel weighed down.

“For some this can mean debts which appear insurmountable and which could spiral out of control. While there is no magic bullet, there is help available.

“Reaching out to organisations such as Citizens Advice, StepChange Debt Charity and other agencies for free and independent financial advice and assistance can be the first step to getting your personal finances back on track.”

Frances Potter, Head of Service Delivery at Sheffield Citizens Advice, said: “We are gearing up to deal with the surge in demand for debt advice that we typically see at this time of year.

“We would encourage people to seek advice early if they can – we provide a free and confidential service.”

According to Aviva, family debt is now at its highest level since 2013 and has risen by £4,000 in the last six months.
