Revised timetables and services are planned to operate on the Yellow and Purple Supertram Routes between Fitzalan Square and Meadowhall today and Sunday. Blue Route Supertram services between Malin Bridge and Halfway are unaffected.

Dedicated YX, Y1 and L1 bus services will replace trams during the works. Replacement bus service timetables and journey planning information can be found online at supertram.com andtravelsouthyorkshire.com; on Twitter @SCSupertram and @TSYalerts; via Traveline on 01709 51 51 51; and on posters at tram stops.

A SYPTE spokesperson, said: "Overnight engineering work to prepare Sheffield's tramlines for Tram Train has been underway since October 2015. However, some of the more complex work can only be completed during daylight hours and over weekends in order for services to be on track to Rotherham from 2017.

“We regret the temporary disruption to Supertram services, and have tried to keep this to a minimum with dedicated bus services to replace trams between Fitzalan Square and Meadowhall. Passengers travelling to events at Arena this weekend are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journey."

South Yorkshire will be the first place in the UK to benefit from pioneering Tram Trains that will provide a direct service from Sheffield city centre to Rotherham Central and Parkgate, travelling on Supertram lines and the national rail network.

Essential engineering work has taken place in January and February 2016 to adapt parts of the existing Supertram track for Tram Train wheels, which are a different size to that of an existing tram.

Future works to make Tram Train a reality include construction of a 400 metre new section of track called the Tinsley Chord to link the tram network to the rail line between Sheffield and Rotherham, and building new Tram Train platforms at Rotherham Central and Parkgate.

The Tram Train pilot is delivered by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), Stagecoach Supertram, Network Rail, Northern Rail, and the Department for Transport.
