Revealed: The average number of sexual partners Doncaster men and women have in their lifetime

According to new figures, one sex has double the amount of partners as the other, on average.

The average number of sexual partners in the UK has been revealed and men have more than double the amount of sexual partners women do in their lifetime.

The Health Survey for England found that men admit to have slept with 9.3 different partners on average.

Women on the other hand admit to having only 4.7 sexual partners.

While a quarter of men claim to have had 10 sexual partners, a quarter of women claim to have had only one.

Men are also more likely to estimate the number of women they have slept with, while women are most likely to certain of the number sexual partners they have had.

The report found: 'More women than men reported having sexual intercourse with only one partner of the opposite sex in their lifetime (24 per cent of women compared with 17 per cent of men), and conversely more men than women reported having sexual intercourse with 10 or more partners of the opposite sex (27 per cent of men and 13 per cent of women).'

The older female respondents were, the less likely they were to have had many sexual partners, while younger women reported more.

Fourteen thousand people responded to the survey, which also asked people about when they lost their virginity.

More women lost their virginity under the age of 16. Almost a third of women had sex for the first time when they were legally under age.

However, only a fifth of men had.

Chief executive Tim Straughan said the report "paints a picture of sexual behaviour which is changing over the generations with younger women tending to begin having sex younger".
