Bosses at Doncaster Council have set up a joint scheme with Rotherham Council and Barnsley Council in which items that have been thrown away may be handed over for other people to use.

Items which are ditched at the borough’s recycling centres will be taken to one side if there is a chance that they can be passed on in a working state. The authority says it is offering residents the chance to see their unwanted goods being re-used instead of recycled, under the new scheme, which will operate from today.

A spokesman said the project will include working with local groups and volunteers from a range of backgrounds to re-use and re-home unwanted goods.

The project will significantly increase the range of items that can be taken to a Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Household items that can be accepted under the new re-use scheme include: flat screen TVs - working or not working but not with broken screens; remote controls; hi-fis/stereos; clean microwave ovens; some brands of vacuum cleaners; mobile phones; games consoles; DVD players; record players; clocks/watches; most other small domestic appliances (toasters, kettles, irons); laptops/tablets; sat navs; petrol mowers/garden equipment; bicycles; good quality exercise bikes/ treadmills/electrical exercise equipment; mobility scooters in good condition or requiring minor repairs.

Items not currently accepted include electric mowers; some brands of vacuum cleaners; printers; video recorders; vacuum tube televisions; electrical toys; furniture; books; toys; gifts and sporting equipment, for example golf clubs.

The council says anyone will be able register with ReFurnish which will process and distribute the items.

Those registering will be able to apply for some of the them.

Meanwhile, Doncaster’s recycling centres are set to extend their opening hours from this weekend.

They will be open from 9.30am until 7pm on scheduled opening days, while Armthorpe waste recycling centre will be open from 8.30am until 7pm.

Assistant director of environment at Doncaster Council, Gill Gillies said: “We’re pleased that the re-use scheme will see unwanted household goods being given a new lease of life, when so often they are just thrown away.

“Working with local groups, including ReFurnish, we can make sure that these items go on to benefit other people.

“The extended opening times of our Household Waste Recycling Centres will also make it even easier for people to recycle their unwanted items through the summer months.”
