Retirement home needed for unwanted elderly dogs in South Yorkshire kennels

Leon and June, elderly crossbreeds, are said to be inseparable and Rain Rescue, which is currently caring for them, wants the dogs re-homed together.

They were in a pound for stray and abandoned dogs before Rain Rescue stepped in to offer them one last chance at finding a forever home.

Lauren Sanderson, the charity’s deputy manager, said: “How anyone could turn their back on these two sweethearts I will never understand.

“It was clear when they arrived that June in particular was unable to eat properly and so we took her straight to the vets. As the vet opened her mouth two teeth fell out of her mouth onto the table, so rotten from years of neglect.

“Leon and June are now recovering from their stressful ordeal here in our kennels but a rescue centre is no place for two seniors.

“They should be curled up fireside, enjoying the relaxation of their twilight years.

“We are appealing to find them a home together. We ask anyone who thinks they can give Leon and June a happy retirement to get in touch.”

In the last 12 months Rain Rescue has rescued, rehabilitated and re-homed 441 dogs and cats.

It receives no Government or lottery funding, relying solely on donations to fund its work.

The charity, which spent £40,000 on vets bills last year, is currently looking after 31 animals.

Rain Rescue was set up in 2002 to help pets in local authority pounds at risk of being put to sleep and to help owners with pets facing difficulties such as eviction from their homes.
