The former school, now The Cusworth Centre, was well alight when firefighters were called out to the scene on Cusworth Lane, Cusworth, in the early hours of the morning.

Four fire crews were tackling the fire at one stage after they received a call to say it was alight at around 2am. Three still remain on the site and are damping down the building. The fire is now described as under control, but there remains smoke in the area.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service are advising residents to keep windows closed.

A spokesman said: “There is a lot of smoke in the area so local residents are being asked to keep their doors and windows closed until the smoke clears.

“The cause of the fire is not yet known. A fire investigation will take place once it is out.”
