Eye witnesses reported seeing armed police officers with tasers on the scene.

One resident, who did not want to be named said: “I was putting my three-year-old daughter in car and there were police all over.

“There was blood all over a car and armed police flying down the road. My daughter had her hands over her eyes.

“This use to be a nice area back and you’d never stuff like this, it’s getting worse and worse in Hexthorpe.”

The witness said the police activity started in Urban Road and then spilled over into Eden Grove.

He added: “There used to be a real sense of community spirit in Hexthorpe when I was growing up here but now things are going down hill.

“Something needs to be done, it’s not fair for people who have lived here all their lives and now feel like they have to move.”

Police said the man sustained minor injuries to his ear.

Public spaces protection orders were introduced last summer after racial tensions and violent offences in the village reached fever pitch.

This isn’t the first and probably won’t be the last. It’s getting worse. This was broad daylight, kids was playing out in the street, what more is it going to take.”
